# 98 Winning the Battle Against Candida (Yeast Overgrowth)
lecture

Candida, or yeast overgrowth, is fast becoming an epidemic out of control. Millions of people are suffering from some form of this condition and don't even know it. Candida albicans is one of hundreds of organisms living in harmless balance within our bodies; however, widespread use of antibiotics and poor diet are killing the beneficial bacteria in our intestinal tracts. Resulting yeast buildup is responsible for an astonishing array of health problems that include weight gain, brain fog, IBS, hormone imbalance, depression, joint pain, headaches, inflammation, and auto- immune diseases. Discover if you are one of the 80% of the population who have this condition; and, more importantly, learn how to reduce this overgrowth and keep it under control by implementing dietary changes as the first line of defense.

Instructor: Carolyn Dean, M.D., N.D.

With Dr. Dean's expert advice, you will learn what foods and behaviors can cause these disorders. So, why wait until your blood sugar levels are out of control when taking action now can help you recognize the signs of hypoglycemia and pre-diabetic conditions. However, if you are one of the many who already suffer from diabetes, take heart; Dr. Dean, who has written or coauthored a dozen books on maintaining or regaining health, will introduce you to a wealth of natural treatment options.

# 100 Food with a Conscience: An Introduction to SLOW FOOD (NEW CLASS)
lecture and tasting

To be a gastronome without being an environmentalist is a shame. ---Carlo Petrini

Twenty years ago, to protest the opening of the first McDonald's in Rome, Carlo Petrini founded an organization he called Slow Food. Now a worldwide movement of 83,000+ members, Slow Food seeks to re- educate our palates and awaken our consciences and consciousness. It also works to defend the biodiversity of our food supply, to connect small-scale producers of exceptional foods with the public, and to help us rediscover the forgotten flavors of excellent gastronomic products. Such foods---and the livelihoods of those who make them---teeter on the brink of extinction in our present "large-scale" climate. Join Makalé Faber to learn about the work and goals of this important movement, and to acquaint ourselves with three exquisite "slow foods"--- olive oil, raw cheese, and Hawaiian sea salt---offered by small-scale food producers. And, because one mouthful is worth 1,000 convincing words, we will taste-test both these unforgettable products and their large-company look-alikes.

1 Monday, February 25, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Instructor: Makalé Faber
Fee: $55; Two People: $100

Contrary to popular belief, drinking milk is not always the best way to keep our bones strong. Research has shown that regular milk consumption doubles the risk of hip fractures! Learn how you can strengthen your bones through time-tested natural methods.
